Trip to Solomons Island
Hi friends and family,
The adventure continues. From the free town dock in Portsmouth VA we did a short trip to an anchorage near Hampton VA. It was actually near the Ft. Monroe National Monument, which we walked around one evening. My goal was to be in clear water so that I could dive under the boat and inspect the propellers and rudders. We had hit several submerged logs, "deadheads", in the Dismal Swamp Canal and I was worried.
But, thankfully there was no discernable damage so the trip continued. However right after I got out of the water a wicked storm swept through. There were about 5 boats in the good sized anchorage. When the winds hit, maximum about 38 mph, disaster almost struck. Our anchor held perfectly. But the boat upwind was dragging. Dawn said "do you see this?" I tried hailing the boat on the VHF radio and also started blasting my horn. The boat got within 50 to 75 feet right in front of us before the captain got control and moved away. That was crazy scary.
By the way, its an unfortunate fact but crazy scary events, big waves and near misses never get recorded so you have to take our word for it.
We continued our trip North once the weather cleared. I'm trying to the oil changed and a piece of equipment is broken. Maybe this week once the small oil pump purchased shows up. And a battery charger failed so that has to be replaced, and I'm no electrician.
We traveled to Deltaville. Slogan "More boats than people" is probably true. We were there on the 20th anniversary of the Maritime Museum. They had a car show, market and the exhibits. Great time. Pictures on the photo page.
Next we went to Reedville VA then on to Solomon's Island Yacht Club. The trip to Solomon's had to be done early as a storm was coming in after lunch. I looked at the predicted wind, SSW, and it appeared we would be protected by land. Instead, the wind was SSE coming straight up the Chesapeake giving us 20 mph winds behind us and 4 to 6 ft seas on our stern. That's what we call Sporty!
I don't have a Relive video of that days trip, forgot to start it.
